3D Character and Creature Art Mentorship

Mentor: Damon Woods | lead 3D Character Artist

3D Character and creature Art Mentorship Overview

As a seasoned 3D Character Artist with over 15 years of hands-on experience in the AAA games industry, Damon specializes in mentoring aspiring and mid-career artists aiming to elevate their craft to professional standards. Damon’s career spans multiple top-tier studios and franchises, including Star Wars: Jedi Survivor and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, where he’s contributed to the visual development and production of high-fidelity characters for next-gen titles.

His expertise covers the full character art pipeline — from concept interpretation, sculpting, and topology, to texturing, materials, and final engine implementation (Unreal Engine, Unity). Damon is deeply familiar with industry-standard tools such as ZBrush, Maya, Marvelous Designer, Substance Painter/Designer, and real-time PBR workflows.

In the mentorship, the focus will be on bridging the gap between artistic vision and production reality. He will provide portfolio reviews, technical guidance, and career advice tailored to both junior artists and experienced artists looking to break into or grow within AAA studios. Whether it’s improving anatomy, storytelling through character design, or navigating the job market, the aim is to deliver actionable, honest feedback grounded in real-world production experience.

Damon’s mission is to help artists not only create better characters but also become more confident, studio-ready professionals in a highly competitive industry.

This mentorship is for artists of all levels. Whether you are new to 3D art and just trying to learn the tools or a working artist looking to make the next jump in their career. Damon has worked with all levels of experience.

When considering this mentorship we recommend:

  • Intermediate understanding of at least one 3D program (Maya, Max, Blender)
  • Solid knowledge of anatomy and form
